INTRO:PERFORMANCE is the third meeting in a series of informal discussions focusing on the specific conditions of performance art within local and national contexts, organised as part of Fabrica de Pensule’s Production Line project. The event is open to anyone interested in the production of meaning through performance art, the relationship between materiality and immateriality, and the perspective of a professional artist working within this medium.
The meeting on Sunday, 19 October 2014 will offer participants the opportunity to take an active part in a presentation by Alex Mirutziu entitled Tactics, Not Systems: Rationalising Materiality in Performance. Drawing on his own practice and theoretical references, the artist will introduce and develop the ideas underpinning the topic, while the audience will be invited to ask questions and engage with the arguments as they emerge.
The lecture aims to create a space for reflection and dialogue around the tension between what is shown and produced, and what remains at the level of unrealised or immaterial ideas:
“The relentless desire to respond in the present is a form of continuous moral abuse. More often than not, the production of a response—an object, a performance—suffers from a deficient design that clutters its environment, whatever that environment may be, and disrupts rather than clarifies. Overproduction as a form of response is no longer of interest. Reflection needs space, rather than its excessive occupation through material form. To think through and engage with a problem, even without giving it a physical or object-based manifestation, is an approach capable of generating a possible form of progress.”
— Alex Mirutziu
The event is part of the Masterclass series within the Production Line project, a cultural programme developed by Fabrica de Pensule and funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund (AFCN).
